Chairman's Message 2010/2011

This year marked the 85th Anniversary of the St Andrew High School for Girls (SAHS). The 81/2 decades have seen the School grow from the initial 21 students and 6 staff to a current student population of 1500 and 137 staff –77 teachers  full and 26 part time, 19 administrative and  15 ancillary.

The Anniversary celebrations and Homecoming week  were exhilarating , providing opportunities for camaraderie and reminiscing !! Please explore the News and Achievements pages of this website for more information about those events. Also go to Facebook SAHS Museum to  share in the the excitement that has been generated by the opening of the Emrie James  Museum .

Congratulations to Sharon Reid ,Principal,  whose strong  , visionary and creative leadership ,  has inspired her SAHS Team.  The Board,  supported by the vibrant PTA and Old Girls’ Association,  has provided leadership and spearheaded activities which have resulted in the continued  development of the School.  The Strategic Plan  as set out in the Balanced Scorecard 2011-2015 clearly demonstrates the very participatory and business -like approach that the School's leadership takes to ensure that St Andrew will maintain its legacy of  excellence in education  and be  on the cutting edge of developments as it strives to become an international model for education.

The Mission of the Founders was based on the fourfold  developmental principles, viz. "physical, mental and social -so as to equip the students with healthy bodies, well trained minds , religious  principles  and ideals to serve their country as disciplined citizens, to enable them to earn a living and to live a Life More Abundant"

These  principles have stood the test of time and remain the basis for the core values of the School today.

The SAHS Foundation was established as another supporting entity: to promote and provide support for the development of the students, the programmes of the School and the infrastructure to  sustain these developments.

To this end we have been seeking and continue to seek  support from the SAHS community – past and present students and their families, friends and well-wishers of the school as well as persons who are committed to providing a first class education for young women in Jamaica.  This support can be provided through contributions to the Endowment Fund or the Special Projects Fund. Funding is being urgently sought for the Special Projects Fund which will finance three  major projects over the next three years:

- the covering of the Garden Theatre,

- the refurbishing of the science laboratories and

- the building of a Cultural Centre for the teaching and nurturing of the creative and performing arts among SAHS students.

The Foundation , thanks to the  able leadership of our past  Chairperson Gloria Barrett-Sobers and catalyzed by the interest generated during the 85th Anniversary celebrations, has realized significant growth in contributions over the past year.  Read the Chairman's Report here.

Thank you to all who have supported the work of the Foundation  - we urge you to contribute to the SAHS Foundation and look forward to your continued support and  participation in our vision for the school.

Life More Abundant!
